Testimonials"I am awestruck by the patience of their instructors. Every teacher exhibits an intense desire to work with each student, knowing that each child is driven by the need to be accepted and ultimately loved" "What Wushu Central has taught me about courage and compassion, I learned indirectly. There is a great deal to be learned in the interaction of students at class. There has never been a day when I have not been greeted warmly and welcomed as an addition to the school. What is more striking, and why I say that affect has been indirect, is the affect the school has had on my family." "Both my wife and children attend class as well. Jacob and Gavin (my sons) are in the Little Heroes program. Every time I watch their session, I am struck by two things. First, a room of four and five year old children is chaotic. Maintaining order is akin to filling a drinking glass with rainwater in a hurricane - possible, but very messy. Second, and most important, I am awestruck by the patience of their instructors. Every teacher exhibits an intense desire to work with each student, knowing that each child is driven by the need to be accepted and ultimately loved - no matter how chaotic the behavior." "The fact that my wife recently started attending class does not sound overly impressive. However, the amount of prodding I had to do to get her in the door made the simple action of her showing up to her first class a monumental victory. It was not a perceived lack of value that, initially, kept her away. The physical and mental rewards of class are readily apparent. What kept Dawn out of class were doubts that she could perform the actions she was in class. Moreover, even if she could perform the actions, would she be any good? In short, she suffered from the same hesitation many of us go through in our daily lives." "I have had the opportunity to attend a few classes with my wife. Regardless of the skill level of the people around her, she makes a genuine effort to perform all of the activities. She does this in spite of feeling self-consciousness in respect to her appearance and progress. What she has gained, aside from physical benefit, is joy from performing the action, regardless of your rank among your peers." "In speaking of courage and compassion, what I have learned was inspired by my family and can be quantified quite simply. Courage is working through fear to find joy; compassion is the ability to share that joy with others amid the chaos of our daily lives." - Michael Nader "We find the team in Wushu Central excellent." "Our 7 years-old is in the Kid's class and our 4 years-old in Little Heroes. We have been impressed with their enthusiasm - they love to go to their Wushu class and spend a lot of time practicing at home. We have noticed a tremendous improvement in their flexibility since they practice regularly. It is now easier to explain concepts such as focus, discipline, self-defense to our four year old - she knows what it means. As parents, we find the team in Wushu Central excellent - not only they are competent in their discipline but they are also great with kids. They know how to be respected but also appreciated and get the best out of our children." - Isabelle Reddy "We are very pleased with the school and coaches of Wushu Central." "My son, age 6, has been a student at Wushu Central for almost a year. Thanks to the firm yet gentle instruction and encouragement from all the coaches, he has made wonderful progress. As he and other children advance through the Little Heroes program to learn new and longer combinations, Coach Chang gives appropriate individual time and attention to make sure these young students keep up with the challenge. My son definitely benefits from and appreciates these coaching sessions. All in all, we are very pleased with the school and coaches of Wushu Central." - Anna Lin "The Little Heroes class has exceeded our expectations." "The Little Heroes class has exceeded our expectations. The coaches are superb and interact exceptionally well with all of the children and provide a warm supportive educational environment. The elements taught within the Little Heroes program apply to daily life including: school, playtime, and interactions with siblings. We give the Little Heroes program our highest recommendation." - A.W. and L.Y., parents
“I was concerned about my son’s ability to listen, especially after watching him literally ‘run circles’ around his classmates at gymnastics class. A friend suggested that I enroll him in a 'martial arts' class, but I wasn't sure whether these would be appropriate for a hyper 4-yr old. So I did some research. The first website I found looked impressive, but seemed to emphasize 'fighting' over all else (I wasn't sure about adding 'kicking' and 'punching' to my son's repertoire). Wushu Central was more what I was looking for - especially their emphasis on developing character 'skills'. I decided to try Wushu Central (since ‘Focus’ and ‘Discipline’ were what my son needed). I signed up for the free trial class, and was amazed to see how well he reacted to the coach’s instructions. He would start to look away and the coach could bring him right back in focus. After just a few months, we could see a dramatic difference in his other classes and at home. I’m so glad I found this!" - Stacey Wright "I think it should be mandatory teaching in all pre-schools and elementary schools." "The Know & Go class is a wonderful class that teaches essential safety skills to young children. I think it should be mandatory teaching in all pre-schools and elementary schools. Parents can learn vital skills that may come in handy for themselves and their children. Coach David is a very enthusiastic instructor who relates well with children and makes the class entertaining. Important points were reinforced with multiple role-playing scenarios. My 4-year old daughter had a great time, and so did I!! A+++" - L. Yee, M.D. "A tremendous difference in his attitude." "I am very pleased to see my son, Christian Barrera, learn his confidence through Wushu training. He is able to be more focused, to concentrate, and have more patience. I believe that he has gained a lot of confidence in himself and see a tremendous difference in his attitude. I am proud that he has set his mind to Wushu training and hope to reach his goals like he anticipate it to be. I would like to thank Wushu Central for all your hard work in teaching your students well and feel that it will pay off in the future." - Caroline Barrera "I'm not sure who enjoyed the party more -- the parents or the children." "I wanted to thank you and your staff again for putting on a great 'kung fu party'. It's such a cool alternative to the usual birthday party. My daughter will always remember her 5th birthday because of it. I'm not sure who enjoyed the party more -- the parents or the children. There were 20 kids at the party -- almost all between the ages of 4 and 5-years old -- and you had them moving between activities seamlessly. You had their attention from the warm-up games to the wrap-up. I have never seen so many preschoolers so well-behaved and enraptured for 2-hours. The best part was the way you used games to introduce wushu. As you know, my daughter loves wushu and she wanted so much to share her love for it with her friends. You did a great job of involving all of the children and making the birthday girl feel special at the same time. Thanks for making this a positive and memorable experience." - Kris Silman "Now the bigger kids have stopped bothering (bullying) him" "My son Ashwanth is four and a half years old. He joined Wushu Central when he was 3 and a half. Being the youngest in his preschool class, Ashwanth had difficulties defending himself when another kid pushes or beats him for some reason at school. After joining Wushu Central, one kid tried pushing him at school and Ashwanth told that kid " Now I am going to Martial arts class and I am very strong I can push you back but I do not want to do that". Now the bigger kids have stopped bothering (bullying) him. (this incident happened almost 9 months back). I have always worried about keeping my kids safe from people who might want to hurt them. After sending him to Wushu Central I have realized that with some simple adult guidance, even very young children have the power to develop basic safety skills that can help them stay safe with strangers and with people they know. These basic skills are the foundation of personal safety habits that they can use for the rest of their lives. I can't wait to enroll my youngest son(he is not yet 3) at Wushu Central. All the coaches at Wushu Central are dedicated and committed. I could not have found a better place for Ashwanth to learn this wonderful art. Thank you so much for being a part of Ashwanth's development. He loves Wushu Central and looks forward for his classes. Even if I forget he always reminds me to help him to practice the 18 strike combinations every single day!" - Nirupa Muruhathasan
"I just wanted to take this opportunity to share with you some of the wonderful changes I have seen in my daughter since she started taking classes at Wushu Central. In a recent physical fitness test at her school, she reached the level of "Presidential". A level of "Presidential" represents the highest level of physical fitness a student can achieve. She has been trying to reach this goal for years. I believe the Wushu class was instrumental in giving her the desire and training to reach this level of physical excellence. In addition, Wushu Central has helped our daughter gain confidence and become more outgoing. Just recently, I was pleasantly surprised to hear my daughter entered a Halloween costume contest at her local school on her own accord. Normally our daughter would not have the confidence to enter a such contest, and most definitely would refuse to parade in front of a such large audience!" - Name Withheld by Request "My life has changed dramatically from wushu. "My life has changed dramatically from wushu. It has made me stronger, more aware, and it made me more confident. I can't imagine life without wushu. If I never had entered wushu I would be a little smart girl who is picked last for physical education. I have improved greatly in physical education. I am now faster and have stronger muscles. Because of wushu I can now feel like a better person." - Ivy Nguyen, 12 years old "I have gotten more athletic and finally reached my physical goals." "Since wushu class started for me, I have gotten more athletic and finally reached my physical goals. In addition to improving fitness, I have also become more outgoing. Being more outgoing, I made more friends in school and in wushu class. Wushu Central has become a big part of my life and I'll never regret starting my wushu journey." - Ashley Chan, 14 years old "Wushu has also helped me become more confident." "If I didn't have wushu classes, then my skating wouldn't be improved as it is now. It also helps me become balanced and flexible, which also helps my figure skating. Wushu has also helped me become more confident if I ever walk by myself." - Michele Tran, 13 years old "This determination helps in all aspects of my life, not just martial arts." "Not only am I able to stay fit and healthy, I am also learning discipline, focus and self control. Wushu is both challenging and fun at the same time. I learn something new every time I come to class. I have also made many new friends through my classes at Wushu Central. I am always striving to do better to achieve my ultimate goal of a black belt. This determination helps in all aspects of my life, not just martial arts. I know that as I continue at Wushu Central, I will learn more about my self and my abilities. Wushu has become a very important part of my life." - Matthew Cepe, 17 years old "One part of my life that wushu has drastically changed is school." "One part of my life that wushu has drastically changed is school. Practicing wushu, especially with the great inspiration I am lucky to have, has hardened my sense of determination. I put a lot more effort towards all of my subjects, especially geometry and PE. In wushu, I've had to slowly learn forms and combinations step-by-step, and I've applied this concept to geometry. It really helps, particularly with things like proofs, where step-by-step processes are the whole point. There's a whole lot of other details that I've learned, but the ones that I'll remember, the ones that changed my life, are to have inspiration in whatever I do, work hard, and concentrate. I've learned all this before, but wushu is the one that will make it stay." - Arlene Chiu, 14 years old "It involves concentration, discipline, and control." "I think Wushu is not only a physical sport, but a mental sport because it involves concentration, discipline, and control. Wushu is also difficult physically because it keeps you in shape and pushes you to go beyond the limit and set a new limit. Wushu is definitely a hard sport; to get a black belt you must have endurance and a strong spirit. I will earn a black belt, despite the challenges that lay ahead." - Erica Ducker, 13 years old "I like Wushu because it sharpens my mind." "I like Wushu because it sharpens my mind. It help me able to self defense. It gives me good health and strength. It gives me discipline. It is a very good work to help you get stronger." - Henry T., Berryessa Chinese School Student "I'm grateful for all the instructions and guidance that coach Chang has given me!" "I enjoy my wushu class very much. Wushu helps me build strong muscles and sharpen my mind. I practice my wushu moves as part of my exercise. Wushu also helps me to be disciplined, and keep on practicing to do things right. This in turn helps me to be persistent and committing to do my other studies the same as well. I have good health, so I can focus and learn better in class. I'm grateful for all the instructions and guidance that coach Chang has given me! Thank-you!" - Michael Lok, Berryessa Chinese School Student "Wushu Central is able to instruct this martial art in a way as to not frightened off young children with strict rules and demands, but rather to treat us with kindness and humor." "I really love the thought of being able to defend the people I know and myself, and if I didn't go to Wushu Central I might still be a weak little girl that says 'Ow!' more often than not. I have gotten more flexible, and I had great fun learning the Broadsword form, because I love swords. I also have this cool T-shirt with dramatic words printed on it. On the other hand, I wouldn't be coming back home steaming, sweaty hot, in extreme pain. Although it is sometimes painful and tiring, Wushu is still a very important and a very useful skill to have, and I believe Wushu Central is able to instruct this martial art in a way as to not frightened off young children with strict rules and demands, but rather to treat us with kindness and humor, like humans rather than boars. I really appreciate this method of teaching and hope that this style will continue to stretch to other teachers and schools of the world." - Cee-Sing Wong, 13 years old "If I never went to Wushu Central, I won't be as good in physical education such as running, stretching, exercise and sports." "If I never went to Wushu Central, I won't be as good in physical education such as running, stretching, exercise and sports. I also will not be able to do broadsword because it's something you do in Wushu Central. I will not have a lot of endurance and I'll be bad at sports." - Cee-Ning Wong, 11 years old "Wushu Central changed me in the best way possible, and I am very lucky to have what I have." "Wushu Central changed my life in so many ways I cannot describe. I have improved with school (both throughout my mind and body), I have gotten more endurance, meet new friends, and of course have gotten better at Wushu. Without Wushu Central I think a big majority of my life would have changed. Wushu Central changed me in the best way possible, and I am very lucky to have what I have." - Shawn Tabrizi, 12 years old "Wushu helps benefit my body, mind, health, and spirit in many ways." "Wushu helps benefit my body, mind, health, and spirit in many ways. Wushu helps improve my strength and gives me a lot of exercise to keep me healthy. Wushu helps me concentrate on the tasks that I need to do. It also helps me to get better grades because it will make me more disciplined to pay attention to the teachers and to do my homework. It will make me become a much better person." - Renee East, student "Wushu Central has also increased my awareness of things." "Wushu Central has helped me improve in body, mind and spirit in many ways. First of all, I have improved in my physical shape. Through constant practice and conditioning, I have gotten stronger. I have been able to maintain lower stances for longer times. I have also improved in flexibility. I now have a more constant flexibility. I can now do the splits whenever instead of having to stretch for a long time before I try the splits. Also, I have improved in mind and spirit. Through the Six Tasks Journal, I have increased my amount of good deed to others. Wushu Central has also increased my awareness of things. Now I notice things quicker and notice things I have not noticed before. In my mind I think about stretching and practicing everyday at home. It's always in my mind. Sometimes, I'll even unconsciously start practicing and then notice a minute later. So overall, Wushu Central has helped me improve in body, mind, and spirit. I hope to continue growing through constant practice and proper guidance." - Alyssa Zhu, 14 years old "In ten weeks I lost three pant sizes and I am in the "My introduction to Wushu Central began with a wrong turn in a parking lot. As I turned my car around I noticed interesting things going on inside a martial arts gym called Wushu Central. I decided to follow my curiosity and so I parked my car and headed on inside. I was immediately greeted with the warm handshake and beaming smile of Head Coach David Chang. My first impression was that he was passionately devoted to the goals of his each and every one of his students. His enthusiasm instantly pumped me up with excitement to give wushu a try. Little did I realize that this choice was my first step on what would become an amazing personal journey! Let me tell you that I was a wreck that day. I was panting, sweating like crazy, and felt like a rusted engine. Right away, however, I received the sort of support and encouragment that animates every class at Wushu Central. The class coaches and your classmates are your personal rooting squad. Several class members repeatedly assured that my struggles had been their struggles when they had started. They all cheered me on, and no one, and I mean no one, ever laughed at me or made me feel lesser. When you join this class you are going to make friends - and you are going to become part of a network of mutual support and respect. You are also going to receive amazing instruction from top level athletes who share Coach Chang's sense of concern and dedication to students. In ten weeks I lost three pant sizes and I am in the best physical condition of my life. My flexibility has never been so developed and my endurance is off the charts now." - Doug Nolan "Discovering Wushu was the greatest choice that I have made in my life thus far." "Discovering Wushu was the greatest choice that I have made in my life thus far. It has finally given my life some sort of meaning and direction. Wushu has allowed me to see that anything and everything is possible in life if you put your heart into it. Even after 5 months of practice and learning I have pushed myself farther than I had ever imagined possible. And the desire for going beyond grows much more as I progress. I feel so much stronger, more confident, energetic and alive. We honestly can be consumed by our fear and doubt if we allow it to do so. And Wushu has given me this opportunity to push myself in conquering and overcoming my fears, doubts and limitations that I set for myself growing up. I know that Wushu will continue to be a great part of my life in the future, constantly increasing in strength and power as I strive to go beyond my self-imposed limitations." - Chris Li "We are delighted to discover Wushu Central." "Wushu has always been my childhood dream, we are delighted to discover Wushu Central. We intend to keep wushu as part of our life to help us pursue health in body, mind and spirit." - Don Li "I feel proud to be able to give my best and more." "After finding wushu, I became more passionate about my own goals and priorities. My life felt more fulfilled and I had something to work for. With each training session, I feel that I become more accomplish, I feel that life has more to offer and that I have more to reach and live for. I feel proud to be able to give my best and more, and I believe that my passion found for wushu will continue to be unwavered, leading me to a better life, stronger and better overall, not just in academics, physical fitness, or things as such, but everything in life overall. Wushu has given me passion, pride, meaning, discipline and confidence, and they are still growing. They will be the things that I will hold forever to become a stronger and greater person." - Hanish Ling, college student "I'm not looking over my shoulder as much anymore." "I am delighted to feel the aches and pains from class because it is a testimony that my body is gaining more strength, more flexibility and more speed. I'm not looking over my shoulder as much anymore, my confidence growing with each class that passes." - Estacie Brooks "An active life is a happy life." "I have gained all of the positive insight that others in wushu have expressed such as confidence, discipline, and happiness. An active life is a happy life - a wise person once told me. It's true. Wushu is very important to me. It challenges me, motivates me, and helps me believe in myself." - Jet Chhay, actor "I look better, healthier, more athletic, and feel stronger." "Thanks to Wushu, I look better, healthier, more athletic, and feel stronger. I'm not all the way to the ground, but I'm farther than I have ever been. I have also made some great friends at the Wushu Classes. Everybody has been fun to work out with and learn with. Learning routines strengthens the mind as well as the body. As opposed to lifting weights or riding the exercise bike (all mindless activities), remembering stances and combos keeps the mind active and sharp." - Steve DeWinter "It is a positive place to come." "After joining Wushu Central, I have seen wonderful physical benefits myself from the training. I am stronger in my hip joints, more flexible then I have been in years, and having a wonderful time putting my body and mind through complicated training and exacting standards which challenge me in a way I have not experienced since Ballet. I respect the teaching strategy you take with adults and children and the patience and positive attitude you and everyone around you shows. It is a positive place to come, practice and improve body and mind." - Indira DeWinter "A promise to keep healthy and fit." "Wushu has made a great impact on my life since I started last April. I feel much more energetic, outgoing and ready to take on what my life has to offer. I'm extremely amazed at how far I've come in taking this in less than a year. I wouldn't have known if I didn't work up the nerves to try. I've also been more focused and increased self discipline in other areas in my life as a result. Wushu has helped advanced my coordination in dance because I have more control in body movements and self awareness. I envision Wushu as a long term committment and also a promise to keep myself healthy and fit. I've been avoiding exercising most of my life because I thought it was boring and I couldn't stick to a regimen on my own. Initially, I thought all martial arts was about was sparring and creating bruises constantly to make you stronger. When I opened my eyes to Wushu, I saw it as more of an art of precision, control and testing your own limits which are endless. Soon enough, I can see myself going to competitions next year and performing. Overall, I feel very happy that I've invested in myself by starting Wushu." - Jamie Chu "I have totally quit smoking since I have started the program." "I would like to thank you for the spectacular assistance in learning a beautiful martial art as well as helping me with building my health back. I have totally quit smoking since I have started the program and have had no craving which to do so. My breathing is a lot better than it was at one time and I have lost weight and built more muscle tone in the process. I have made these accomplishments and pursue to further progress. It is also great to have a staff around such as the staff at Wushu Central to guide me in my training in a manner that motivates me to come back each time eager to progress more than the previous times. Wushu Central has not only helped me with health but as well brought back an old love that I have left behind for quite a while which is martial arts. I cannot think of a better place to obtain all these things that I have either received or have woke again than Wushu Central where they are not only my teachers but as well I like to consider 'friends.' Who have opened many of life's opportunities that I wish I had years ago but am grateful I have these at the present time. Thank you." - David A Strong Jr., 25 years old "Such an exciting and rewarding sport." "[Had I not come to Wushu Central], I would have never gained the enjoyment of participating in such an exciting and rewarding sport. I would not have developed the coordination and flexibility that I have today and that I hope to improve in the future. Finally, I would have missed out on the opportunity to constantly challenge myself to perform better each and every class." - Steve Hirata "I am deeply appreciative and happy." "Exploring Wushu at Wushu Central has become a vital part of my life. The art is not easy, but the rewards are immediate. Thanks to talented head coach David Chang who tailors the teaching to each and every student's personal needs, when space and time allow it. I am deeply appreciative and happy to get access to it first hand at Wushu Central." - Tuyet TN Houetin "It has given me a reason to stay healthy." "Since starting wushu, I have become more flexible, increased my stamina, and of course, lost a significant amount of weight. It has given me a reason to stay healthy, a goal to look forward to. It's shown me a way to return to a time when I was in better shape. Where would I be without wushu? I would be at home wasting time. - Tony Hung "What Wushu has given me can not be measured." "What Wushu has given me can not be measured. I'm slowly learning that perfection can be achieved through vigorous practice. I've learned that I have full control of what I can do with my body and my mind and that it is an invaluable instrument in my everyday life that I used to take for granted. Before I started Wushu I had little or no confidence in regard to being put into a situation that I would have to defend myself. Had I not come to Wushu Central I would have still been walking around with my head down afraid to look at a stranger whom I thought looked intimidating. I now have the confidence to walk with my head up without being afraid of what might happen if I were attacked. Wushu has taught me patience and acceptance in this unforgiving world. I watch the younger students in class and I offer help where I can instead of getting frustrated like I used to be. I feel at peace when I am in my Wushu class and the worries of the world disappear for 2 hours a week. I wanted to come to Wushu because I needed focus and discipline, two things that I lacked in my life before I started my class. I still need work in these areas except now I am slowly developing both. I never realized how much control I lacked before I started Wushu but now I am confident that I can be in control of my body and the movements I make. Had I not joined Wushu I would probably be a bigger stress case than I am now. I feel light on my feet, something that I have not felt in many years. I see less obstruction in my life and more challenges. I have come so far in a short amount of time yet I know that the journey has just begun and I have much to learn. I anticipate the challenges that Wushu has to offer with open arms." - Jason Janes "Wushu is a high level art." "I believe that Wushu is a high level art and has a lot to contribute especially to serious students like me. Without Wushu, I never would have experienced the style that has affected and helped me with my improvement with my previous other traditional Kung Fu styles." - Landy Keil "I am coming closer to my own vision of an ideal self." "Wushu is a direction I take in order to realize my vision of becoming an ideal, well-rounded individual. Among other qualities, an ideal person possesses the athleticism to do anything he/she wants, and the aestheticism to make doing so inspiring to others. I have always believed that to be a true athlete, it is unimportant to be required to meet the arbitrarily set standards, for instance, a 6-minute mile, or to have a .355 batting average. An ideal athlete strives to realize the full potential of their body, strives for a healthful hardship. Wushu, by its diversity of movements and techniques, trains the body to improve in this direction of ideal. In order to lead others to this ideal, it is important that others can be inspired to follow. Wushu, by emphasizing technical details and ultimately, overall aestheticism in the form (a.k.a., the coolness factor), accomplishes this also. In the tech industry in which I work, I see a lifestyle practiced by many but which I dread. It follows something like this: Wake up. Go to work. Return from work. Make dinner. Watch TV. Sleep. Lather, rinse, and repeat. People who follow this lifestyle have no goals, and in my opinion, no life. Their bodies will soon deteriorate, as will their minds. Their bodies will eventually become obsolete for the task of active living. Their hi-tech knowledge will also become obsolete, as they will never be able to compete with those youth who come after them. A healthful body however could significantly delay or prevent the physical decay, and the aesthetics learned from the art of wushu will only age but never get old. Wushu has given me athletic and intellectual goals to strive for, and I know that by doing so, I am coming closer to my own vision of an ideal self." - Bob Kuo "Wushu Central has taught me that martial arts are more than just physical training, but also mental and spiritual training." "I’ve always thought that martial arts are a medium to strictly enhance physical fitness. The training in Wushu Central has taught me that martial arts are more than just physical training, but also mental and spiritual training. Over the past 11 months of wushu training, I have developed a strict discipline in an effort to enable me keeping up with my busy schedules. I manage to accomplish my tasks because of the focus and concentration that I acquired during my training in Wushu Central. By having those properties in me, I am able to gain more than just physical fitness through Wushu Central but a much fuller life as a human being." - Arianto Gunawan "The inspiration moves me to become the stronger person I desire to be." "In Wushu, I have found a fun & healthy way to spend my evenings. I feel inspired by my fellow students & coaches to achieve their level of athleticism. The inspiration moves me to become the stronger person I desire to be. Since joining Wushu, I have felt better about myself because I'm watching less television in the evenings, I'm learning fun exercise routines & I'm spending quality time with my girlfriends." - Pauline Liu "Wushu Central showed me that if you work hard enough at something then you'll be able to achieve your goals." "If I had not discovered Wushu Central I would not have met all these inspirational people, and also no physical and mental benefits. Wushu Central showed me that if you work hard enough at something then you'll be able to achieve your goals. Wushu class has been able to give me an outlet to sculpt my mental and physical aspects of my life, as well as giving me a reason to leave work early for Wushu class. If I was not taking this class I would probably be gaining more weight and feeling tired most of the day. Mentally this class teaches you that it's all in the mind that if you focus your thoughts you can strive for any goals. Overall, I'm glad that I'm taking Wushu classes because it helps me get through my rough week." - Lee Lacanlale "It is a martial art that teaches many positive skills and provides excellent physical fitness training." "I am glad that I started learning Wushu because it is a martial art that teaches many positive skills and provides excellent physical fitness training. Although I have always exercised before, I have found that sometimes 'working out' can be rather monotonous and unchallenging. Even though Wushu can be difficult, I enjoy this form of exercise more than others because it is very motivating to be learning a new art form while building physical fitness. In this way, Wushu is very engaging because it is both physically and mentally challenging. Had I not taken Wushu, I probably would continue to go to the gym and use ellipticals, bicycles, etc. And while this equipment can be helpful to stay fit, they really are not very fun. For me, Wushu is a much better way to exercise and learn with my friends." - Priya Moore "Wushu challenged me to achieve more than I dreamed possible on both a physical and spiritual level." "Before I joined Wushu, I always avoided participating in sports or any kind of ongoing physical activity. I was never athletic, and I lacked motivation. Once I summoned the courage to try Wushu, I realized it was one of the best decisions, I ever made. Wushu challenged me to achieve more than I dreamed possible on both a physical and spiritual level. With each kick, stretch, and stance that I learned, I gained strength, endurance, energy, and confidence. I still have much to learn and improve, but Wushu has motivated me to reach my full potential." - Christine Ryczkowski "Because of Wushu Central, I haven't touched a gym in almost a year and somehow managed to become stronger and more fit than my 4 years of college." "Because of Wushu Central, I haven't touched a gym in almost a year and somehow managed to become stronger and more fit than my 4 years of college. Finally, without Wushu Central, I never would have learned to appreciate the beauty and the difficulty of a certain aspect of martial arts. Before walking into the school, my idea of martial arts revolved solely around fighting techniques and how to defeat an opponent. Wushu Central introduced an unfamiliar concept to me- not one of destroying, but one of creating (creating cool forms). If anything, what I learned from Wushu Central makes me enjoy martial arts more than I ever did." - Joseph Quito, 22 years old "Had I not discovered Wushu Central I would most likely feel lower levels of energy, confidence, and enthusiasm, and I definitely wouldn't feel as physically fit as I do now." "From the moment I began training at Wushu Central, I knew that Wushu would have a positive impact on my life. It is difficult to pinpoint exactly why I was so sure of myself, but it was mainly seeing the enthusiasm of both the coaches and the students alike that inspired me to feel so positive about martial arts. At this point, it's difficult to imagine how my life would be without Wushu because it has become so significant to me. Initially, I became interested in studying martial arts as a method of improving my physical fitness, energy level, and confidence. Only a few months after joining Wushu Central, I had already noticed positive improvements in all of those areas and more. Now, Wushu has become so much more than just a form of exercise. I find myself looking forward to the days when I know I'll be attending Wushu class because it is always a nice break from the usual monotony of the average work week. The physical challenges I have had to face in terms of learning new techniques and forms in Wushu and being able to overcome some of those challenges and improve myself in the process have allowed me to see that I'm capable of achieving more than I ever thought possible. Carrying this positive outlook into other areas of my life has improved the quality of my life overall. Had I not discovered Wushu Central I would most likely feel lower levels of energy, confidence, and enthusiasm, and I definitely wouldn't feel as physically fit as I do now." - Donna Portacia "Wushu Central has really given me a second home and a second chance at doing something which I never had the opportunity or time for as a youth." "Without Wushu Central I doubt that I would be practicing any type of external Wushu. I would not have made significant gains in leg strength, muscle tone, flexibility and cardiovascular conditioning that I have by just practicing the internal. Perhaps I would be further along in my internal studies, but I would not have had the satisfaction of doing something, which I thought - at my age I was not capable of doing anymore. This is a tremendously empowering feeling. There is a sense of accomplishment that is very personal and singular and is hard to describe unless you have completed a marathon, or participated in an extreme sport at an age when most people are simply concerned about buying clothes that don't make them look too fat. Wushu Central has really given me a second home and a second chance at doing something which I never had the opportunity or time for as a youth. If I had not discovered Wushu Central I would probably be acting my age, and quite frankly, who wants to do that!" - Steve Polycn, 43 years old "Before I joined Wushu Central my physical well being was only average, now it has improved tremendously." "If I hadn't discovered Wushu Central, my life would be very different. One significant difference would be my physical health. By actively engaging in the classes, I've drastically improved my flexibility and strength. Before I joined Wushu Central my physical well being was only average, now it has improved tremendously. I've also noticed that other athletic endeavors that I have pursued have become easier. I have improved endurance and my performance in these sports have gotten better. Without Wushu Central, these side benefits would have never had occurred. Also, if I hadn't discovered Wushu Central, I would have one less activity to do after class, which would have resulted in me becoming lazier. Overall, my personal well being has improved because I discovered Wushu Central." - Justin Yip, College student "Wushu has helped me grow in may ways and I am excited about continuing this learning process which teaches my mind and my body." "There are many pieces to my life each one tied to another in understood and, sometimes, not so understood ways. I have been attending basic-level Wushu classes for about 4 months now and I have learned some important lessons. First, I have learned where my limits are and where I am physically at this point in my life. By attending class and working on the various exercises and our basic form I have pushed my physical limits and my body has pushed back. My excitement and enthusiasm for this form of martial arts has kept me going through and I have learned to be patient but persistent. As time goes on I am sure that these limits will change and I will be able to do more and more. Second, I have seen what I can be if I remain dedicated to the art and continue to strive to be better. There is a large age range in my class and for some students (i.e. the younger ones) Wushu comes easier and seeing them advance encourages me to continue striving to improve. Watching my instructors and Wushu videos has illustrated what our amazing bodies can accomplish and I know that I can already do much more than I could 4 months ago when I started. Lastly, I have learned how important it is to develop a routine that includes exercise whether it be Wushu or some other type of physical activity. Due to a busy lifestyle it has been difficult to stick to a regular routine of exercise and when I decide to do something else instead of practice it shows. I recognize now how important it is to be consistent even if it means just practicing and/or stretching for short periods of time each day. Wushu has helped me grow in may ways and I am excited about continuing this learning process which teaches my mind and my body." - Victor Valencia, 41 years old "My fine motor skills are better and I'm more coordinated." "How would my life be different if I hadn't discovered Wushu? The most obvious answer is that I would probably be 25 pounds heavier, and in a lot worse shape. Because of the Wushu that I've been doing, and the associated weight loss, there have been many changes. I play hockey better; I'm more flexible and have more endurance. My fine motor skills are better and I'm more coordinated. My hips don't hurt after a game. My back doesn't hurt as much anymore. I rarely get heartburn. Clothes that haven't fit for quite some time fit again. In short, I feel like I got an overhaul." - Rory Toma, 36 years old "I was not only impressed with Coach Chang's outstanding accomplishments in Wushu, but I also appreciated Coach Chang's attention to child development and his interest and experience in reaching out to troubled youth." "I was enamored with the instruction, philosophy, and guidance at Wushu Central right from the start. I looked into a few different martial arts schools before stumbling upon Wushu Central and I even attended 2 or 3 lessons at another school while simultaneously attending the first few sessions at Wushu Central. While the instruction at the other school was good, the ideology signified at Wushu Central exceeded my expectations, and thus it was my first choice for instruction. I was not only impressed with Coach Chang's outstanding accomplishments in Wushu, but I also appreciated Coach Chang's attention to child development and his interest and experience in reaching out to troubled youth. The focus on being a positive role model, developing and strengthening character, and improving our skills are all aspects of Wushu Central that make me extremely proud to be a student here. These strengths within the coaches are what motivate me to practice hard and try my best in Wushu and in my life. If I had not discovered Wushu Central I might have enrolled in another school, however I'm not sure I would feel as satisfied or as passionate about Wushu as I do now. Attending Wushu Central has also elicited my interest in learning more about the underlying culture inherent in Wushu. I have definitely developed a great sense of pride in being a part of Wushu Central and I believe this is a reflection of the enthusiasm, positive attitude, and sense of community exhibited by the coaches who hold the school together." - Stacie Granada Vigil "Wushu Central's program allows me to see my own progress and improvements quickly." "Before I joined Wushu Central, I had been 'starting' my exercise program for over two years. Having a background in bodybuiding, I thought I could easily 'get back into it.' While that may have been true, staying with the program for more than a week was a whole different story. My goal is to train my body to become more flexible and agile as I get older. I was beginning to get discouraged thinking that I just don't like to exercise anymore, or I was plain lazy. I drove by Wushu Central for a couple of months and decided to check it out. After the first introductory lesson, I was hooked. The opportunity to achieve flexibility and agility presented itself. Now, I exercise regularly. There is no more starting and stopping. The variety of movements I learned has made this program fun and ever changing, challenging both my body and my mind. I also realized that the reason I would start and stop exercising in the past was due to boredom. Today, practicing Wushu is something I look forward to everyday. Wushu Central's program allows me to see my own progress and improvements quickly. There is no time to get bored! The best part is, I can watch action movies and name all the moves they use!" - Veronica Steffan, Herbalife distributor "I must thank all of my teachers who have helped to keep me in perspective and honest." "I have learned to always be honest with myself about my limits. It takes courage to admit that I need help. It also takes courage to start on a project of self improvement. I have compassion for people who are just starting out in wushu. I realize that although I am new I always try to help in any way I can. I must thank all of my teachers who have helped to keep me in perspective and honest. I now have the courage to meet challenges with a renewed sense of self." "I know that although I am just beginning to learn wushu I already feel the courage to seek out in dream. I find strength that stems from positive feedback and other peoples' compassion." - Mark Scherer, 24 years old "I have become more motivated to live a more healthy lifestyle." "Over the past several months since joining Wushu Central, I have improved my health by losing about 10 pounds in weight, and have increased my strength and stamina through the workout session. This has resulted in an improved motivation to maintain a healthy diet, continue to increase my body strength, and to continue to increase my flexibility through the Wushu workout sessions. I have become more motivated to live a more healthy lifestyle through exercise, diet, and personal drive to better my health so I may live a longer and healthier life." - Lester Santo, 50 years old "Each Wushu Central class is an encouraging and motivating experience for me." "In the short time that I have been with Wushu Central, I have already seen many changes in my life. As a single mom I am always on the go and I found that I would tire easily and couldn't find the energy to keep up with my and my daughters daily activities. Now I have my energy and I noticed I even walk faster. I also work in a fast paced restaurant and I noticed I don't leave as tired as I used to." "I found that I am becoming more confident in social situations for several reasons. First of all, since starting my Wushu classes I have lost 9 pounds and I have actually noticed the difference in my clothes. Second, I am proud to tell people what I am doing and how it has given me something positive to focus on and how I look forward to coming to my classes." "Wushu Central has also helped me to relieve my stress and it takes my mind off negative things in the world so I could relax and get into 'the zone.' I could tell my body is changing for the better and I now notice when I am not working out as often as I should." I am very excited and can't wait to see what Wushu Central will teach me in the years to come." - Elva Flores, 30 years old "I'm not lazy anymore, and much more disciplined than before, and more focused, and very goal-oriented than before." "I have only started wushu in the past 2 weeks, but the improvement that I got in my mind, spirit, and most definitely in my body. Before I easily get exhausted, and couldn't do a lot of work and chores. I'm mostly shy, as you can tell when I first got there. I'm lazy, but now I have worked on all of that. My strength has improved in a way I never thought it would, I'm very well active in a lot of things and chores in our house. I stretch out every morning and run. I barely go out of the house before, but now I very much go out with my friends, cousins, and do normal things a teenager do, with some limitations. I'm not lazy anymore, and much more disciplined than before, and more focused, and very goal-oriented than before. I hope that I can improve more at everything." - Dominic Abano, 18 years old "We are all striving together for one goal which is to have a peace of mind and heart outward and in." "In Wushu Central and in my life my body has changed dramatically. In just four months I've come from 195lbs to 175lbs. Being 52 years old and generally working out with people 20 years younger I have found out that age will not hold you back. If you have the courage and honesty and compassion wushu gives me. Wushu has changed my mind in the way that it has given me the confidence and guidance to live a healthier lifestyle. Going into this as a spiritual person, from beginning of my class to the end of my class I feel a closeness with everybody I work with. We are all striving together for one goal which is to have a peace of mind and heart outward and in." - Stephen Wilson, 52 years old "I am proud to say wushu has brought a peace and happiness to my spirit that I was lacking." "Wushu Central has improved my health in many glorious ways. As far as body, I have 3 children. I gave birth to my 3rd 5 months ago. Since then I have felt weak, heavy, and tired. Wushu has given me a strength and energy that I have not felt in many many years. I have lost 10 pounds so far and am looking forward to reaching my goal weight. As a stay at home mom and homemaker I'm with my children alone during the day. In the event where something may happen and I have to protect my children and myself, paying attention and smart thinking may eliminate a crisis. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say life can be a bit stressful and I am proud to say wushu has brought a peace and happiness to my spirit that I was lacking. I look forward to every class and I am honored to learn everything I can about the art of wushu, body, mind and spirit." - Renee Bracamonte "Wushu has sparked a new kind of growth in me." "Wushu as a martial art and as a form of exercise has definitely improved several of my personal aspects. It has helped me a lot in the sense of body in that I am more fit. My physical abilities have grown. I've noticed that I have become more flexible than I once was. In working out, I center those goals around my goals in wushu. In the mental aspects, I have become more focused with physical activities. My spirit has grown in that I'm more enthusiastic about aerobic types of workouts. I also have more energy in the things that I do. In meeting people in wushu, I feel inspired by the friendliness and dedication to helping me, personally, as well as others to learn and become better. The energy and the support from everyone is a definite aid in my progress. Wushu has sparked a new kind of growth in me. I hope that it will continue to help me grow as a person in strength and in character." - Mark Rafael, college student "Wushu has helped me to overcome my own thoughts about what I am able to do physically." "Wushu has helped me to overcome my own thoughts about what I am able to do physically. For five years I have not done much of anything, because of arthritis. Now that I am able to do some of the exercises, although not perfectly, it helps me to realize that I am on the road to recovery and I can try to become a 'normal' person again. I believe wushu will only help to make me stronger as well as more flexible, which is important for my joints. With these improvements, I will be able to improve spiritually as well. If I can prove to myself that I can do it, then that will be the greatest success and it would make me extremely happy. I blamed my arthritis on my having to quit basketball, but sometimes I think I should have tried harder. I no longer want to look back on my life with regrets due to this disease. This time, I want to go as far as I can." - Jana Gigliotti "I am growing quite attached to Wushu Central and I make a one-hour commute from the East Bay just to attend classes." "Wushu Central has had many effects on my overall being since I joined in July 2004. The first thing I noticed was the physical change in my body. My muscular composition has grown more toned and I feel stronger every class I attend. I have also noticed a significant difference in flexibility and agility. In regards to my mind, I find myself more focused these days, and increasingly disciplined. I am growing quite attached to Wushu Central and I make a one-hour commute from the East Bay just to attend classes. In the beginning, I joined Wushu Central for the workout. Soon after, I found myself very excited about the prospect of incorporating wushu into my daily life. I believe wushu to be a very beautiful and self-enriching art." - Kristi Kerr "I sleep much better now!" "Tai Chi is a good form of physical therapy, and has helped me recover movement ability in my left arm which was damaged from surgery. I sleep much better now!" - Sue Chang, cancer patient "I can promise you that you will learn how to do things that you might have never been able to do before." "Jeannette and I started taking Tai Chi together about a year ago. Jeannette has since dropped two dress sizes, I've lost four inches off my waist. We sleep better and generally feel better. Jeannette's knees have bothered her for years, and now don't at all. My shoulder has had a lot of mobility problems and has been generally sore for years. No longer. Being pain free without medication is great. Jeannette has no athletic background. I used to play college football and basketball, and I used to box. Sifu David Chang has managed to keep us both challenged and interested while teaching us Tai Chi at the same time. The interesting thing about the classes is that you can make the workout as hard or as easy as you want. Sifu has an engaging way of working with your goals individually and as a group. I can promise you that you will learn how to do things that you might have never been able to do before. You'll learn and grow in a gradual manner, building on your successes. You'll become mentally sharper and more focused. It truly is a combination of meditation and exercise." - Duane & Jeannette Warren
